A four-day bicycle race and a three-day music festival are both set for Denver this weekend, which means drivers can expect road closures and potential headaches as they navigate through alternative routes and congested streets.
The second annual Colorado Classic, which includes races in both Vail and Denver, is a professional road race. The first two days (Thursday and Friday) are in Vail and the weekend races are set for Denver. Colorado Department of Transportation plans to close roads in both cities during the events.
On Thursday, drivers around Vail should expect road closures and traffic shifts from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. after exiting Interstate 70 at the Vail Village Interchange (Exit 176) and along the South Frontage Road. Click here to see Thursday’s course map.
On Friday, CDOT plans to close the eastbound and westbound off-ramps at the I-70 East Vail interchange. Other closures include South Frontage Road East, I-70 Frontage Road, Big Horn Road and Ten Mile Road. These road closures will start at 8:30 a.m. and end around 3 p.m. Click here to see Friday’s course map.
The race heads to Denver on Saturday and CDOT anticipates starting to close roads in the RiNo district Friday afternoon for both the race and the Velorama music festival.
The music festival, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will close Blake and Walnut streets from 27th Street to 33rd Street. The festival’s main entrance will be on 27th and Blake streets. Click here for a map of the festival’s layout.
Closures for stage three (Saturday) and stage four (Sunday) of the bicycle race include parts of Jefferson and Denver counties, such as the off-ramps from northbound and southbound Interstate 25 to 20th Street, Wadsworth Boulevard between W. 29th Avenue and W. 32nd Avenue as well as CR 93 between I-70 and the entrance to Red Rocks.
On Saturday, there will also be short-term (1 hour or less) off-ramp closures at I-70 exits 264 (Youngfield), 259 (Morrison) and 256 (Mother Cabrini Shrine). Northbound US 285 at North Turkey Creek Road, Colorado 470 exit 2 (Alameda) and U.S. 6 at Simms Street/Union Blvd will also have short-term closures.
CDOT also plans to distribute race information the morning of each stage, including any updates regarding impacts to the state highway system.
